Thank you for your letter No. 54147/49 of the
7th February regarding the Hong Kong University. I think
it would be fatal both from the point of view of the
University and of the Colony if the University were to
become an Anglo-American institution. Financial grants
from American sources, e.g. Rockefeller, for particular
projects is a different matter, nor do I see any objection
to some of the staff being non-British - there are already
some such but the University should remain predominantly
British. I have discussed the matter with Ride who agrees
with these views.
